Former welterweight world champion Antonio Margarito (39-8, 27KOs) made his long awaited return last Saturday night at Arena Mexico. It was his first fight in more than four years.
The tough Mexican puncher won a ten round unanimous decision over Jorge Paez Jr.
The victory was not easy. At the end of the sixth round, Margarito as badly hurt and went down hard on his back. Paez also did some good work in the contest and won some rounds on the official cards. In the end the scores were 95-94, 96-93 and 97-93.
Margarito is now looking to return to action on a date in July. The opponent being targeted is Ramon 'Inocente' Alvarez (23-4-2, 15KOs),who is the older brother of WBC middleweight champion Saul 'Canelo Alvarez.
Unbeaten in his last ten outings, Alvarez has put together a string of wins which include Omar Chavez, Ben Tackie, Vivian Harris and James Winchester.
"I'm here in Guanajuato and I will go to Guadalajara. I think next week I will go talk to the entire team, with Bob Arum and Top Rank, and let's see what there is. I know that Zanfer would like me to fight 'Inocente' Alvarez, but we'll see, "Margarito said to ESPN Deportes.
"What I can tell you now is against Alvarez or against another fighter, I need one more fight [before I try to go after a big fight]."
"I will not rush myself. I did not feel in rhythm [against Paez], so possibly in July we to return to the ring."
Ramon Alvarez likes the idea of that fight and says he is ready to face Margarito whenever he wants to get back in the ring. Alvarez was in action on January 30th when he knocked out Winchester in nine rounds in Baja California, Mexico.
