Alfredo “El Perro” Angulo is preparing to take on Erislandy Lara in a significant Junior Middleweight clash on June 8th at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA. There are already talks of the winner possibly taking on Saul “Canelo” Alvarez next if a fight with Alvarez and Floyd Mayweather Jr doesn’t happen on September 14th.
When Angulo was on the most recent edition of BoxingScene Radio, he was asked how he felt about the possibility of facing Canelo and fighting for a world title. Angulo expressed that he’d definitely want the fight but he’s not sure the feeling would be mutual.
“Truthfully that stuff doesn’t matter to me. Right now I only have Lara on my mind. Them saying the winner of this fight could face Canelo Alvarez next, like I’ve said many times before, I have no problem fighting with Canelo. The one who doesn’t want to fight is Canelo. He doesn’t want to fight with El Perro” Angulo would tell BoxingScene Radio.
Alvarez has often been criticized for being protected and not taking on dangerous challenges. This past April however, Alvarez not only fought a fighter that most thought he’d never step in the ring with in Austin Trout, but he also defeated him and captured his second world title in the 154 pound weight class.
While Angulo would like nothing more than to face Canelo next, he points out Canelo’s trainer has said in the past they would not fight Angulo so he doesn’t see that fight being a true possibility for him should he be victorious June 8th.
“His trainer has always said that the last fighter on the list [for them to fight] is El Perro. Saying I will never fight with Canelo. A couple years back, for over a year I was rated number one [as the mandatory] and that fight never happened so I don’t think they are thinking about fighting me if everything goes well [June 8th]” said El Perro.
