Andre Ward: record, next fight and profile →
Tony Bellew (30-2-1, 20 KOs) does not believe Andre Ward (32-0, 16 KOs) is retired from the sport. Earlier this month at the O2 Arena in London, Bellew set the record straight by stopping David Haye in the fifth round of their heavyweight rematch.
Back in 2013, WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson saw his last mandatory defense fulfilled, when he knocked out challenger Tony Bellew. Nobody could have guessed, that Bellew would then jump up in weight by 25-pounds to become a world champion and major player in the cruiserweight division.
Former WBC cruiserweight champion Tony Bellew (30-2-1, 20 KOs) is not bothered by any of the critics who are ridiculing his statements with respect to a potential fight with former super middleweight and light heavyweight champion Andre Ward (32-0, 16 KOs), who retired last year.
Tony Bellew (30-2-1, 20 KOs) is gunning for a showdown with former super middleweight and light heavyweight champion Andre Ward (32-0, 16 KOs), who retired last year. Ward has not fought since stopped Sergey Kovalev in their rematch in June of 2017. Prior to Ward's retirement, there was some discussion regarding a potential fight with Bellew at the cruiserweight limit - but the two sides were unable to reach a financial agreement.
As host, Ward brings his undefeated record and undisputed boxing expertise to The Contender. Throughout his incredible 13-year undefeated career, he’s held multiple world titles in two weight classes including, unified WBA (Super), WBC, Ring magazine, and lineal super middleweight titles between 2009 and 2015 as well as the unified WBA (Undisputed), IBF, WBO, and Ring’s light heavyweight titles between 2016 and 2017. According to former cruiserweight champion Tony Bellew (29-2-1, 19 KOs), there is interest in a showdown from former unified super middleweight and light heavyweight champion Andre Ward (32-0, 16 KOs). Ward, 33 years old, retired from boxing last year, a few months after gaining a stoppage win over Sergey Kovalev in their June rematch.
WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev was fuming when he was advised of the recent statements that were made by the recently retired Andre Ward. Last week, Ward spoke to BoxingScene.com about Kovalev's pursuit for a trilogy fight - and how the Russian boxer is not satisfied with the outcomes of their two fights.
Igor Mikhalkin considers Sergey Kovalev to be the same ferocious fighter he was before Andre Ward stopped him in their rematch. Ward hurt Kovalev badly with a right hand in the eighth round June 17, before landing several questionable body blows that caused referee Tony Weeks to stop their light heavyweight championship rematch in Las Vegas. Russia’s Mikhalkin thinks that controversial loss, coupled with his unconvincing unanimous-decision defeat to Ward in their first fight 15 months ago, motivated Kovalev to regain the status he lost to the since-retired Ward.
After losing back to back fights to Andre Ward, Sergey Kovalev insists that he's ready to write a new chapter in his boxing career. On March 3rd, the Russian defends his WBO World Light-Heavyweight Title against Igor Mikhalkin in New York, which will be his second fight since losing to Ward last June.
