Former champion Amir Khan (29-3, 19KOs) has promised that he will never again "kill himself" to make weight. Khan has a big frame and admits he was going through hell when making weight at lightweight and junior welterweight.
He made his welterweight debut in May, dominating and dropping former champion Luis Collazo three times for a lopsided decision win.
On Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Khan is facing another former welterweight champion in Devon Alexander.
Down the road, if he starts struggling to make the welterweight limit of 147, then a move to 154 will be seriously considered.
"I think I could go to 154, maybe towards the end of my career. That would be crazy going to 154. I realize that I'm getting stronger. One of my sparring partners, I used to spar with him when I was at 140 and he said that I'm so much stronger [now at 147]. I'm knocking sparring partners down. Even in sparring, every time I'm hitting someone I'm hurting them. Collazo is not a guy who goes down quite easy. I know the power is developing," Khan said.
"I'm not going to kill myself again [making weight]. I know that 154 is an option for me one day. At the moment 147 is perfect, I'm not killing myself and I'm happy at the weight."
