Alvarado: Rios is The Shot I Needed, I'm Must See TV!

By Ryan Burton

Highly rated junior welterweight contender Mike Alvarado (33-0) visited with The Boxing Lab, BoxingScene.com's official audio show this past Tuesday. The Denver, CO based fighter broke down his highly anticipated showdown against former lightweight champion Brandon Rios (30-0-1) that takes place on October 13th and will be broadcast by HBO.

"Mile High" Mike has been campaigning for a big fight for quite sometime now. He told us that he views the upcoming clash as the opportunity of a lifetime. "When I heard the news I was excited. I was thrilled, pumped up."

"This is my shot to really shine. This is a huge fight. Brandon is a tough guy. We are both tough warriors. He's undefeated and I'm undefeated."

Alvarado feels that a win over Rios will open the door to even bigger fights. He said that he would love to face four division champion Juan Manuel Marquez in the near future.

"This is the shot I needed. This will put me in the mix for all the big fights. I deserve it. I'm must see TV.  A win over Rios will put me position to fight a guy like Marquez," Alvarado stated.

Rios won a controversial decision over Richard Abril in his previous fight this past April. In his fight prior to that he lost his title on the scales at the weigh in before his sluggish 11th round TKO victory over John Murray. Alvarado told us that he is surprised that Rios accepted the fight.

"I'm surprised he took the fight. He didn't look too impressive in his last two fights and he is facing the biggest puncher in the division. I'm excited he decided to fight me," Alvarado confidently told The Boxing Lab.

Alvarado took a brutal beating from Prescott and came back in the last rounds to beat the lights out of him. I dont see Rios taking that kind of punishment from a 157pd Prescott. Abril clearly beat Rios and will…
