BoxingScene.com reported on Wednesday that the World Boxing Association (WBA) was having trouble locating Alexander Ustinov (33-1, 24 KOs) to take part in their heavyweight tournament.

Earlier this year, the World Boxing Association (WBA) announced a resolution earlier this year which ordered a heavyweight tournament with a series of fights to create a single world champion. At the moment the WBA super champion is Tyson Fury, the WBA regular champion is Ruslan Chagaev and the WBA interim champion is Luis Ortiz.

The hunt continues to find a willing opponent for Luis Ortiz' next ring appearance. The unbeaten Cuban souhtpaw is due to headline a March 5 edition of HBO's Boxing After Dark, but the clock is winding down for the staff at Golden Boy Promotions to come up with a suitable candidate.

The World Boxing Association (WBA) has come under fire for its creating of multiple champions per weight class. It remains a problem to this day in many weight divisions, but progress begins with a single step. For the WBA, that first step is a big one, starting at the top (physically speaking) with the heavyweight division.

After Luis Ortiz (24-0, 21KOs) shattered Bryan Jennings in in seven rounds on December 19th at the Turning Stone Casino Resort in Verona, the Cuban heavyweight remained fairly close to the gym. He advised ringsidefigthingnews.com that on Monday, January 11th, he plans to start preparing for his next fight.

On or about August 26, 2015, the WBA received a request from Golden Boy Promotions to sanction a fight between #7 ranked Luis Ortiz (24-0, 21 KOs), from Miami by way of Camaguey, Cuba, and #15 ranked Matias Vidondo (20-2-1, 18 KOs) for the vacant Interim WBA World heavyweight title on October 17, 2015

Light heavyweight prospect Alex Hughes (7-0, 3 KOs) outboxed overweight slugger Murad Dalkhaev (5-6, 2 KOs) over six rounds. Hughes used his physical assets to keep much shorter Dalkaev at bay with his jab - for a well-earned unanimous decision.

According to Russian promoter Vladimir Hryunov, Belarusian giant Alexander Ustinov (32-1, 23 KOs) will face former heavyweight champion Samuel Peter (35-5, 28 KOs) on December 12 in Moscow, as part of the undercard to the cruiserweight battle between former champions Roy Jones Jr. and Enzo Maccarinelli.

In the opener, 20-year old Jr. lightweight Roger Gutierrez (9-0-1, 7 KO) of Maracaibo, Venezuela, scored an easy technical knockout in two rounds. Gutierrez used a left uppercut to bust the nose of 23-year old Luis Nino (5-4, 4 KO) of Caracas, Venezuela, in the second round. A right hand turned Nino torso first to the ropes and referee Juan Martinez halted the action.

LOS ANGELES - Five months after one of the biggest victories of his professional career against Kevin Mitchell, WBC Lightweight World Champion Jorge "El Nino de Oro" Linares will celebrate by fighting in his native Venezuela for the first time in more than five years as he defends his title for the second time against Mexico's Ivan "Macanon" Cano on Saturday, October 10. The 12-round title fight, which will take place at The Poliedro de Caracas, will air on ESPN Deportes on Sunday, October 11 starting at 9:00 p.m. ET on a two-hour tape delay. It will be Linares' first bout in his home country since a 10-round decision victory over Francisco Lorenzo on March 27, 2010.
