BoxingScene.com has been advised that the WBA has ordered former champion Alexander Povetkin (26-1) to face Luis Ortiz (20-0) for the WBA "regular" heavyweight title. Wladimir Klitschko is the super champion.

Povetkin previously captured the "regular" title when he defeated Ruslan Chagaev in 2011 and defended it four times before losing to Wladimir Klitschko last year. Ortiz, a decorated Cuban amateur, recently signed with Golden Boy and will be fighting for his world title.

Ortiz is ranked #2 while Povetkin is ranked #3 by the organization. Ortiz is scheduled to return the ring on April 3rd against an opponent to be determined.

Fcuk the belt.this is a solid match up,I expect to see Povetkin win and re establish himself as a top contender.he will have a couple of mandatory defences in the 18 months the victor holds the belt before having to face the super champion.I'd like to see Povetkin face one of Perez or Jennings.

It's not a real belt, and they don't deserve a shot (even at this fake belt), but at least they're putting in someone good enough to beat Povetkin.
Neither deserve a shot at the belt right now. Ortiz has fought very soft opposition, and Povetkin should need to have a win or two before fighting for the WBA belt he just lost. The WBA should have a four-fighter eliminator instead.
Exactly my thought.

That's disgraceful. WBA is the worst sanctioning body in the sport. Ortiz isn't even a top 50 HW, he has no business fighting for the vacant non title best or whatever it is. And Povetkin should be fighting someone good. The Chisora fight would have been awesome. Now he can just ease his way...

Ortiz vs Romanchuk was a slugfest, but the scoring was a joke.
