Alexander: Malignaggi a Good Choice For My 147 Debut

By Phil D. Jay

Former unified light-welterweight champion Devon Alexander has been the focus of several Twitter rants by another former world title holder at 140lbs in Paulie Malignaggi and says a bout with the ‘Magic Man’ is something that would interest him now that he has moved up to welterweight.

The 24 year-old got back to winning ways last month in a controversial points win at the 140lb limit over Lucas Matthysse and immediately announced his intention to box at 147lbs. Malignaggi then set his sights on a match-up with ‘The Great’ by Tweeting some choice remarks about Alexander and it could lead to the pair signing contracts for a bout later this year.

Alexander (22-1, 13 KO’s) held the WBC and IBF titles at the lower limit until Timothy Bradley dethroned him in January and a meeting with the brash New-Yorker is something that appeals to him as he looks to get a world title fight against one of the welterweight champions. The likes of Victor Ortiz and Manny Pacquiao hold belts at 147 and Alexander thinks adding Malignaggi's name to his record could help him get to those champions.

“Well I think it [a Malignaggi fight] will be a good fight for me. My First fight at 147. It will definitely make my presence known at welterweight,” Alexander told World Boxing News.

paulie by 2nd round KO... it will be so brutal, that the 2nd round KO win of martinez will look like a TKO...
