Juanma Looks To Bring in Alex Ariza For Mikey Garcia

Former two division world champion Juan Manuel "Juanma" Lopez (33-2, 30KOs), who struggled with weight in the past, is looking to retain strength and conditioning coach Alexa Ariza. Ariza is known for his work with Manny Pacquiao, Amir Khan and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Juanma returns on June 15th in Dallas against WBO featherweight champion Mikey Garcia (31-0, 26KOs). A few months ago the Puerto Rican boxer admitted to having difficulties in making the featherweight limit.

Alex Ariza, Manny Pacquiao’s strength and conditioning coach, reacted to his fighter’s stunning sixth-round one-punch knockout at the hands of Juan Manuel Marquez Saturday night in Las Vegas. “I don’t understand how that should be shocking,” Ariza said following the fight. “[Marquez] had a strength coach, an educated one, one with credentials, and that’s what happens when you follow your guy’s program. He didn’t do anything.” In an interview with Marcos Villegas of the Boxing Channel last month, Ariza stated that there was less of a focus on strength and conditioning, and more on boxing for this particular camp leading up to this weekend. “We didn’t do any of it. We quit,” Ariza said postfight, likely referring to the shift in training.

Earlier today, trainer Robert Garcia announced that strength and conditioning coach Alexa Ariza would be working with undefeated featherweight contender Mikey Garcia, who challenges WBO featherweight king Orlando Salido on January 19th at The Theater in Madison Square Garden. Ariza is best known for his work with Manny Pacquiao, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Amir Khan. For some time, Ariza has worked with the fighters in Freddie Roach's Wild Card Gym, but now he could be working with the growing army of boxers in Garcia's gym in Oxnard.

Strength and conditioning coach Alex couldn’t hide his elation over “Fighter of the Decade”MannyPacquiao’s performance after two weeks of training at the Wild Card Gym of Freddie Roach in preparation for his fourth showdown with Juan Manuel Marquez at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on December 8. Ariza told the BoxingScene.com/Manila Standard that on Saturday, his sixth day of sparring, Pacquiao “was amazing.” Ariza told us Pacquiao sparred eight rounds, three with the Russian sparring partner whom he had earlier described as “a beast” and five with longtime sparring partner Raymund Beltran.

Last night, inside of the Wynn Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada, junior middleweight contenders Vanes Martirosyan and Erislandy Lara fought to a technical-draw verdict that left much to be desired. After a little more than nine rounds of action, an accidental head butt resulted in a nasty gash above Martirosyan’s left eye that saw the fight go to the scorecards. Judge Richard Ocasio favored Lara 87-84, while Jerry Roth saw the bout in Martirosyan’s favor 86-85, with Dave Moretti’s 86-86 tally leaving no room for a winner.
