Akifumi Shimoda Upsets Lee, Captures The WBA Title

By Jhonny Gonzalez

In a minor upset, Akifumi Shimoda (23-2, 10KOs) won a wide twelve round unanimous decision over Ryol Li Lee AKA Retsuri Lee (17-2, 8KOs), to capture the WBA super bantamweight title at the Ariake Colosseum in Tokyo, Japan. The scores were 115-111, 118-109 and 118-109. The fight had a lot of action. Lee and Shimoda were both down in round three. Shimoda would later scored knockdowns on Lee in rounds five and eight. Lee was making the first defense of the title he won with an upset decision of Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym last October. Shimoda will now have to face mandatory Victor Terrazas of Mexico.

This belt is changing hands like crazy. First Lee beat Kratingdaenggym, then Shimoda beats Lee. I fully expect Terrazas to beat him next. Not a great division at the moment.
