Former four division world champion Adrien Broner is back behind bars in Cincinnati -- after the judge threw the book at the boxer for arriving to court more than 3 HOURS late.

But when he got there, the judge was PISSED -- and ordered him into custody immediately. The judge then ordered Broner to serve 30 days in jail for contempt of court.

Broner told the court that he thought someone had put something in his drink on Monday night -- which caused him to be late.

The judge said Broner appeared to be drunk or hungover.

He's due back in court on August 17th ... when he gets out of jail.

According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, Hamilton County Common Pleas Judge Robert Ruehlman reportedly said:

"You don't look well. You look like you have a hangover," Ruehlman said, according to a transcript of the hearing.

"I have been sick all morning," Broner responded. "When I finally got well, I called my lawyer."

"It's not a good excuse," Ruehlman said. "He looks like he's drunk or hungover. To coin a little boxing phrase – you're not ducking this one."

Broner's attorney, Will Welsh, told The Enquirer that Broner accepts the judge’s ruling.

“He certainly apologizes and understands why the judge was upset,” Welsh said in an interview.

Court documents say Broner pointed a handgun at a West Chester man during a betting dispute over $14,000 and then knocked him unconscious. The incident has also led to a lawsuit against Broner.
