Abril vs. Bogere, Russell vs. Gusev Will Move Forward

By Rick Reeno

As BoxingScene.com reported earlier today, undefeated Puerto Rican featherweight Jayson Velez suffered a bad ankle injury and was forced to withdrew from his scheduled fight with WBC featherweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon. The championship match was going to headline a Showtime televised tripleheader at the Apollo Theater in New York City on March 2.

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer informed BoxingScene that the event will continue forward with the two remaining fights.

Richard Abril (17-3-1, 8 KO’s) and Sharif “The Lion” Bogere (23-0, 15 KO’s) will collide in a long awaited fight for the WBA lightweight title. Their encounter has been shuffled around several times in the last few months.

In the other portion of the doubleheader, rising featherweight contender Gary Russell Jr. (21-0, 13 KO’s) will go against Russia’s Vyacheslav Gusev (20-2, 5 KO’s).

Russell Jr is fighting this Russian who is 20-2 and ranked #7 by the WBO. That's a good opponent for him at this point in his career.

Ponce's people probably don't want any of Gary Russell Jr to be honest.

Still can't understand why they can't just cut Gusev a check to step aside and move Russell into the main event against Ponce.
