Even in the twilight of his career, Arthur Abraham is able to maintain a steady rate of activity in the ring. The reigning super middleweight titlist is due for his third fight of 2015, returning on November 21 at TUI Arena in Hannover, Germany.
An opponent has yet to be determined for the 35-year old, who has spent his year to date facing repeat opposition. Following a rematch win over Paul Smith in February, Abraham closed the book on his rivalry with Robert Stieglitz, scoring a 6th round knockout in their fourth fight this past July.
The 35 year-old returns following an impressive victory over domestic rival Robert Stieglitz on July 18, 2015, in which Abraham delivered a devastating sixth-round knockout win to bring a conclusive end to their four-fight saga.
"After beating Stieglitz for the third time, I felt like I'd been liberated," Abraham (43-4, 29KOs) said of their fourth meet. "I’ve always had confidence in my punching power. My opponents should beware, and the fans should rejoice as there are plenty more knockout victories to come!"
The victory was the most decisive of the series, with Abraham going 3-1 in their rivalry that dates back to 2012. His first win over his familiar foe helped resurrect his career, claiming a super middleweight belt just over a year after having bottomed out in his run during the Showtime Super Six World boxing classic.
The win gave Abraham his second reign in as many weight classes, having previously served as a longtime middleweight titlist. His stay as a super middleweight champ didn't last long, managing one defense before suffering a 4th round stoppage to Stieglitz in their March '13 rematch.
Abraham went on to claim a split decision win last March and has since racked up four successful defenses, including his aforementioned knockout win over Stieglitz in July. The feat came at a price, as Abraham suffered a partially fractured jaw which has since healed.
"Everything’s ok. My jaw has healed and I’m looking forward to getting back into the ring."
News of his return comes hours after his career-long promoter Sauerland Event was forced to cancel its 35th anniversary show, which was slated for September 26. With the letdown comes a ray of sunshine for the future, perhaps a metaphor for the last several years of Abraham's career.
"In recent fights, Arthur has looked better than ever," said promoter Kalle Sauerland. "Many people have tried to write him off over the years, but he has consistently delivered, proving himself to be one of the top elite-level fighters in the world.
"The knockout against Stieglitz showed he has not lost any of his power, and fans can look forward to seeing the ‘Abrahammer’ again on November 21."
