Las Vegas, Nevada - Former three division world champion Abner Mares (28-1-1, 15KOs) is not worried about the words of advice that WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez is providing to Arturo Santos Reyes (18-4, 5KOs).
Mares is facing Santos on Saturday night as part of the NBC televised debut of 'Premier Boxing Champions.' Santos and Gonzalez are both promoted by Oswaldo Kuchle in Mexico. In a recent interview, Gonzalez revealed that he helped prepare Reyes for the fight and advised him of certain tactics to use against Mares.
Gonzalez scored a first round stoppage over Mares in August of 2013. The words of advice have provided a boost to Reyes, who vowed to finish Mares off.
"The reason he's saying that, and I get it, he's under the same banner as Jhonny. They have the same promoter and they are telling him, or whoever [is telling him] to say this and that but I don't let it get to me. Jhonny is saying he gave him advice. What did he tell him about? That lucky left hook that he landed, because he didn't outbox me, he didn't outwork me. It was just a good punch that he caught me with, the left hand, and that was it but I was getting up too. After I take care of [Reyes], we'll fight Jhonny," Mares told BoxingScene.com.
