Former three division world champion Abner Mares (28-1-1 with 15 knockouts) is anticipating a ring return on March 7th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The fight will be part of the Haymon Boxing debut show on NBC. The card is topped by a welterweight battle between Robert Guerrero and Keith Thurman.
BoxingScene.com reported a few days ago that WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez is likely going to face Gary Russell Jr. in March and then a rematch with Mares on a date in June. Mares also confirms the same information.
"I think boxing and all of Al Haymon's fighters are going to benefit with this partnership with NBC," said Mares to ESPN Deportes. "To win the fight in March, a fight with Jhonny Gonzalez has been discussed. I asked Haymon about that fight with Jhonny, but I think he's going to face Gary Russell in March, and then with me in June. I do not know if that [June fight] would be for NBC or Showtime, but the fact is that this fight is close."
