Abner Mares Eyes Move To Featherweight Very Soon

By Ernesto Castellanos,

WBC super bantamweight champion Abner Mares (25-0-1, 13KOs) is considering a move to the featherweight division in the near future. Mares has been trying to get a unification match going with WBO king Nonito Donaire, but the two sides are not even close to an agreement. At featherweight, Mares sees the big names and the bigger money to be earned. Outside of facing Donaire, there is not much left for Mares at super bantam.

"At that weight there are attractive opponents, the big fights, the big purses," Mares said. "I can still make super bantamweight, and for a good amount of time, but in order to do that I have to work hard. I think that I can still make a couple of fights at this for a match against Nonito Donaire, and make my mandatory defense against Victor Terrazes."
Agree. Mares wants the fight, Donaire wants the fight, both are real champions and warriors of the ring who are willing to prove they're the best and give the fans the fight everyone wants to see. It's bitter old Arum…
He's ducking nonito by eyeing a move to 126, obviously
so by that logic nonito must have been ducking the bantamweight tournament winner...right? so nonito will probably be at 122 forever because clearly mares feels safe from him at…
