WBC super bantamweight champion Abner Mares (25-0-1, 13KOs) is considering a move to the featherweight division in the near future. Mares has been trying to get a unification match going with WBO king Nonito Donaire, but the two sides are not even close to an agreement. At featherweight, Mares sees the big names and the bigger money to be earned. Outside of facing Donaire, there is not much left for Mares at super bantam.
"At that weight there are attractive opponents, the big fights, the big purses," Mares said. "I can still make super bantamweight, and for a good amount of time, but in order to do that I have to work hard. I think that I can still make a couple of fights at this weight....search for a match against Nonito Donaire, and make my mandatory defense against Victor Terrazes."
