Abner Cotto Survives Early Knockdown to Remain Unbeaten

By Jake Donovan

Abner Cotto remained unbeaten, though was forced to climb off the canvas in order to get past Alejandro Rodrigeuz in his hometown of Caguas, Puerto Rico.

The final scores never made its way to the conclusion of the Telefutura 'Solo Boxeo Tecate' telecast, though Cotto dominated every round, save when he was floored in the opening round.

The surprise knockdown hardly affected the outcome, as Cotto wasted no time in shaking it off and regaining control of the action for the remainder of the night.

Cotto advances to 15-0 (6KO). The second cousin to Miguel Cotto has big plans for the future as he continues to build an audience on the Solo Boxeo circuit.

Edgar 'Sasso' Lopez was forced to settle for a majority draw in a spirited six-round battle with Orlando Vazquez.

The co-feature battle was all action, though Lopez appeared to get the better of most exchanges. The unbeaten super featherweight prospect was cheated out of a final round knockdown, when referee Roberto Ramirez Sr. ruled that Vazquez was pushed to the canvas.

A right hand to Vazquez' temple prior to clinching and falling suggested otherwise, but the official ruling held. Had a knockdown been called, Lopez would have earned a unanimous decision.

Instead, he only managed the lead on one official card, winning 58-54. The other two judges saw the bout 57-57 to produce the majority draw verdict.

Lopez remains unbeaten, but his record now stands at 5-0-1 (3KO).

Vazquez is now 5-1-1 (1KO), having lost his first pro bout in 2006 and then sitting out before returning three years later.

A win came in his return, following by another three-year hiatus before a comeback staged this past September. Saturday's bout was already his fifth in a span of just 10 weeks, having just fought last Friday.
