Abie Han: record, next fight and profile →

Ryan Burton catches up with junior middleweight contender Glen Tapia to discuss his recent stoppage victory over Abie Han in a fight of the year war.

Texas Station Casino, Las Vegas - Super middleweight prospect Jesse Hart (7-0, 6KOs) dropped Eddie Hunter (8-9-2, 2KOs) twice for a second round TKO victory. Hunter was dropped at the end of the first, and then went down again in the second. He made it up but referee Jay Nady felt he was in no condition to continue.

PASSAIC — Glen Tapia got goose bumps the first few times he returned to train inside this familiar Fourth Street boxing gym last month. The undefeated junior middleweight prospect hadn’t trained at the old Passaic PAL location since his father figure and former trainer, Jorge Martinez, moved the operation to Monroe Street in 2007. Once his current trainer, Alex Devia, moved his Garden State School of Boxing from Paterson to the old Passaic PAL spot last month, Tapia took stock of how boxing saved his life.

The weights are in for Friday's ESPN Televised event from Texas Station in Las Vegas. A big doubleheader being presented by Top Rank, with Chris Avalos in a high stakes eliminator against hard puncher Drian Francisco and a battle of undefeated junior middleweight with Glen Tapia facing Abie Han.

Kendall Holt hasn’t been this excited about a fight, not even one of his own, in a long time. The former WBO junior welterweight champion cannot wait for Friday night, when he is 100 percent certain Glen Tapia will take the significant step in his pro boxing career that so many of Tapia’s contemporaries from New Jersey have failed to take. Transforming fighters from prospects to legitimate contenders is very difficult; so tough that no boxer from New Jersey has done it since Paterson’s Holt stopped then-undefeated David Diaz in February 2005. Three years later, Holt won a world title. He expects Passaic’s Tapia (18-0, 10 KOs) to travel a comparable path with a win over another unbeaten, hungry prospect, El Paso’s Abie Han (19-0, 12 KOs), in their 10-round junior middleweight match in Las Vegas (10 p.m., ESPN2).

On paper, Abie Han and Glen Tapia appear very evenly matched. Han, of El Paso, Texas, has a 19-0 record, including 12 knockouts. Tapia, of Passaic, N.J., is 18-0 and has 10 knockouts. The prospects have faced similar levels of opposition in pro careers that began a year apart and both boxers are promoted by Bob Arum’s Top Rank Inc. Han still feels like the ‘B’ side as their high-stakes, 10-round junior middleweight match Friday night in Las Vegas draws near.

Las Vegas - Chris Avalos of San Diego will take on super bantamweight Drian Francisco of the Philippines on Top Rank's ESPN Friday Night Fights card in the Dallas Events Center at the Texas Station Gambling Hall & Casino on July 12. Avalos has a record of 21-2 with 16 knockouts. Francisco is 23-1-1 with 18 knockouts. The main event is scheduled for 10 rounds. The big card will include an anticipated showdown between two young undefeated fighters. Glen Tapia, 18-0, 10 KOs, of Passaic, N.J. will face Abie Han, 19-0, 12 KOs, of El Paso, Texas. The super welterweight bout is set for 10 rounds. There will be a full card of fights including local favorites. First bell is 5 pm local time. The televised bouts begin 7 pm. Tickets at $50, $25 plus applicable fees go on sale Friday, May 31.

The Marroquin-Escalante bout will headline a “Solo Boxeo” card and will take place at the WinStar Casino in Thackerville, OK. UniMas will televise the Top Rank card live at 11:30 PM ET/ 10:30 PM CT. Top Rank will be promoting two fight cards on March 16th, as they will promote the Timothy Bradley-Ruslan Provodnikov card, which will take place at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA. HBO will televise that card.

El Paso County Coliseum, El Paso, Texas - Welterweight contender Brad Solomon (19-0, 7KOs) was dropped twice in the first round and the fight appeared to be on the verge of being stopped, but he survived, regrouped and fought a war with hard-puncher Yoryi Estrella (10-9-2, 7KOs) to win an eight round majority decision.
