According to the Miami Herald, undefeated Sultan Ibragimov still plans to more forward with his March 10 bout at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Originally, he was set to challenge WBO heavyweight champion Shannon Briggs, who last week withdrew from the contest due to pneumonia.
Warriors Boxing, Ibragimov's promoter, apparently launched a petition to the WBO to have Ibragimov fight for the WBO interim title. The outcome of the WBO's decision will make no difference, Ibragimov will still fight on the date as $400,000 in rent was paid by his promoter to stage the event at the theater in MSG.
Leon Margules, president of Warriors Boxing, told the paper that if the WBO sanctions the bout, once-beaten Calvin Brock is the only ranked contender willing to face Ibragimov for the interim title. Brock is coming off a seven-round TKO loss that came at the hands of IBF champ Wladimir Klitschko last November.
The WBO promised a decision by Tuesday.
