British heavyweight champion David Price has lost his unbeaten record after a stunning second-round stoppage loss to American veteran Tony Thompson. The 29-year-old was a hot favourite to continue his march up the heavyweight ranks, with a shot at the world title his ultimate goal.

But Thompson, an experienced campaigner whose only two recent losses came at the hands of world champion Wladimir Klitschko, had other ideas, and he ended things early with a brutal right hand. Nearly 6,000 fans crammed into Liverpool's Echo Arena to cheer on Liverpudlian Price, who had beaten all of his last seven opponents inside four rounds.

"I don't see the punch. He caught me. The referee stopped the fight. It's heavyweight boxing at the end of the day. It was a good shot. What can I say? I think it caught me on the back of the neck or the side of the neck. Then you get knocked down and your find yourself of the floor. It's just one of those things, it's heavyweight boxing for you. You can get caught by a big punch. I've ended plenty of fights like that and now it's happened to me. I felt comfortable. I was looking for openings and I just got caught by a punch that you don't see and those are the ones that hurt you," Price said.
