WBA super flyweight interim champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire may opt to go after the vacant WBO title now that countryman “Marvelous” Marvin Sonsona has decided to move up in weight after losing the 115 pound title on the scales over the weekend.

Sonsona’s handlers have said they plan to move the growing 19 year old southpaw up to the super bantamweight limit, paving the way for Donaire to possibly fight for the vacant title since Alejandro “Payasito” Hernandez failed to win the title after being held to a somewhat controversial twelve round draw by Sonsona at Casino Rama in Ontario on Sunday, Manila Time.

Donaire is scheduled to fight on February 13 at the Hilton in Las Vegas on Top Rank Promotions “Pinoy Power III” but no opponent has been named although the name of Mexico's Gerson Guerrero (34-8, 26 KO’s) has been mentioned..

The 32 year old Guerrero is ranked No. 4 by the WBC and No. 12 by the WBA but Donaire told us that since the WBO title is now open he might look at the possibility of going for that title.

Donaire said he was prepared to fight “no matter who it is.”

The former IBF/IBO flyweight champion who scored the :”Knockout of the Year” in 2007 when he won the titles from Australia’s Vic Darchinyan with a perfectly-timed left hook that sent the cocky Darchinyan crashing to the canvas and staggering into the ropes after he got up,  said he had started light training this week and was “feeling pretty good.”

Donaire said he had “learned something about myself and I think there should be a knockout in my next fight.”

Donaire who watched the Manny Pacquiao – Miguel Cotto “Fire Power” showdown in Las Vegas said “he inspires me all the time and I got back into the gym much earlier.”

Talking about Marvin Sonsona’s failure to make the weight and losing his title on the scales, Donaire said “well he’s still a kid and doesn’t understand. He’s got a lot of growing up to do.”

At the same time  he said he had a feeling that Rodel Mayol would win and said the new WBC light flyweight champion deserved the world title which he grabbed with a stunning 2nd round TKO of Edgar Sosa of Mexico who was making his eleventh title defense and was heavily favored to win.
