Klitschko Makes His Move To Promise Povetkin a Shot

By Rick Reeno

Recently the IBF made a decision to order an interim-title fight between mandatory Alexander Povetkin and the highest ranked available challenger, who happens to be ex-champion Sam Peter. The winner secures a shot at the full champion Wladimir Klitschko.

Klitschko will probably fight his WBO mandatory Eddie Chambers in March. From I've heard, Klitschko has promised the IBF that he will not seek an exception after the Chambers defense, and further promised to fight Povetkin next. In other words, Klitschko doesn't see a point to an interim-title fight.

Povetkin's side have a different outlook on the situation. Their fighter has been the mandatory since 2007. Even more important to their cause; by gaining the interim-title they not only secure a shot at Klitschko - but they also secure a bigger percentage of the split if the two sides head to a purse bid. For Povetkin's team it's the smart play because Klitschko has very few options after Chambers. Wladimdir's brother Vitali Klitschko, an overwhelming favorite to beat Kevin Johnson on December 12, is the WBC champion. The winner of next Saturday's WBA title fight between champion Nikolai Valuev and challenger David Haye, has already committed to fighting John Ruiz.

The amateur game is completely different from the pro game, everyone knows this. That's why all the stories coming out of the Povetkin camp are about how he is very excited over the new things he is learning and that he's soaking them up like a sponge.
