BoxingScene.com was advised by promoter Dan Goossen that Paul "The Punisher" Williams will still move forward with a scheduled ring appearance on December 5 on HBO. The venue and opponent have yet to be determined but WBC junior middleweight champion Sergio Martinez is one of the names in the running. Williams had been scheduled to fight WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik. The fight was originally set for October 3 and later postponed when Pavlik was unable to train due to a staph infection on his left hand. The fight was pushed to December 5. On Wednesday afternoon Pavlik's promoter Top Rank, and his trainer Jack Loew, announced his withdrawal from the Williams fight. Pavlik's staph infection had not healed up as expected. Loew told a Youngstown paper that his fighter is not capable of making a fist with his left hand.
After two withdrawals, Goossen and Team Williams are not willing to wait any longer. They are working fast to secure a site and a good opponent for December 5.
"We are going to put this behind us. We gave Kelly Pavlik and Top Rank every opportunity to make this fight a reality. We went through two cancelled dates and right now it's all about Paul Williams and focusing on bringing him back on December 5th," Goossen told BoxingScene.
"We'll try to get him a world title fight or have him defend his title [WBO interim-junior middleweight title]. Right now we are talking to a few sites. Paul is the star and the guy the fans love to see and we plan to bring him back on December 5th - no ifs, ands or buts."
Williams' manager/trainer George Peterson was livid with the recent developments. Peterson predicted this exact scenario when he spoke to BoxingScene.com a few weeks ago. One thing is for sure, Williams is not waiting around.
"We are tired of this bullsh*t. We know the deal here. He just needs to man up but we ain't fooling around with him no more. We ain't waiting around for him. [Paul] wasn't surprised. We've been through this thing before. We were expecting this. We know when someone doesn't want to fight us. We're going on. We're ain't waiting on him no more. I don't know who, but we are fighting somebody on December 5," Peterson said.
Peterson is not exactly convinced that Pavlik is still suffering from the staph infection on his left hand. He doesn't think Pavlik ever planned on going forward with the fight.
"If he had the staph infection for this long, he would have been poisoned to death. It's not the hand that needs to be corrected. They need to treat his heart. His heart is what needs to be corrected. They keep treating the wrong thing. We are not waiting on this guy any more," Peterson said.
"I told them at the press conference this was going to happen. I turned around to Paul and said this fight wasn't going to happen. I told you this was going happen. We've been preparing for this. How long can you go with this kind of bullsh*t?"
