Junior middleweight prospect Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is very motivated to challenge WBC champion Sergio Martinez. WBC president Jose Sulaiman recently revealed that Chavez Jr. would become the mandatory challenger to Martinez in 2010, and the fight will be ordered by the sanctioning body in the next couple of months.

Chavez returns on December 19 in Mexico, headlining another Latin Fury event. After that fight, Chavez reveals that his promoter, Top Rank, would like to set a fight with John Duddy in February or March of next year. Depending on what happens, Chavez would probably not fight Martinez until the summer. Top Rank has brought Chavez along slowly and matched him well. Martinez would be a monster leap in class for the Mexican star.

"It's nice to know that I am now finally going to be the official challenger. I'm very happy because I've been waiting to get the chance to fight for a world championship. I do not know yet who my next opponent will be but of course I would like to put on a good fight there and prove that I should fight for the title," Chavez Jr. told The Record.

How about Margarito vs. Chavez Jr? That would be good enough for me. I'd also like to see Margo destroy Berto.

I think he should have picked someone else at 154, a Verno Philips type to test himself. I think Martinez is huge step up for him, probably too big.
This would be a total mismatch that I can't believe that Top Rank would ever allow to happen.
I agree, talk about a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge step up.
