This is why a tuneup fight is dangerous to take. WBO bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel suffered a deep cut above his left eye on Saturday night when he fought in a non-title bout against Alejandro Valdez on the Latin Fury card in Mexico. The fight was ruled a TKO win for Valdez after the fight was stopped due to a cut. Later it was ruled the fight was a no-contest.
Due to the amount of time needed for the cut to heal, his scheduled fight with mandatory Eric Morel is once again postponed. The fight has been postponed a number of times. It was scheduled to take place on the Manny Pacquiao-Miguel Cotto undercard on November 14 in Las Vegas.
WBO president Francisco "Paquito" Valcárcel told Primera Hora that he plans to call for a WBO interim-title fight, which may take place on the Pacquiao-Cotto undercard. He may rule for Morel to fight Valdez for that title.
"Morel is going to fight on that card in November. What we are going to do is find another contendor, perhaps Valdez, or another who may be available to fight for the temporary bantamweight title of the WBO," said Valcárcel.
