The IBF has ordered junior bantamweight champion Vic Darchinyan (32-2, 26 KO’s) to “go directly to his mandatory title defense” following his loss in a bantamweight title bid against champion Joseph Agbeko (27-1, 22 KO’s) last Saturday in Sunrise, Florida.
IBF Championship Committee chairman Lindsey Tucker informed BoxingScene.com, insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports that Darchinyan had been granted an exception to the regulations and allowed to fight Agbeko despite being due for a mandatory title defense.
One of the conditions laid down by the IBF in case Darchinyan lost to Agbeko was that he would undertake a mandatory title defense of his 115 pound title.
Tucker said a letter was sent to Darchinyan and No.1 contender Simphiwe “Golden Master” Nongqayi (15-0, 6 KO’s) of South Africa, ordering their handlers to start negotiations for the mandatory title defense.
The IBF official said Darchinyan “must defend the title within 90 days or by October 11, 2009” against Nongqyi who earned the title shot by defeating Francisco Arce, brother of Jorge Arce, in a title eliminator in Mexico last February 28.
Nongqayi is represented by IBF and WBC award-winning “International Trainer of the Year” Branco Milenkovic who has done much to establish South Africa as a prominent site for big international fight cards.
Tucker informed both parties that negotiations should begin immediately and be concluded by August 13. In case the negotiations are not successful Tucker said the IBF will call for a purse offers to determine who will promote the fight, the date and the venue.
Agbeko after beating Darchinyan to retain his bantamweight belt accused Darchinyan of pushing him in the seventh round and throughout the fight adding “he is very dirty and rough in the ring”
Taking a swipe at the referee, Agbeko said “I was fighting two people in the ring – Darchinyan and the referee but I didn’t care if there were five people in the ring. I was going to win and come back out with my championship belt.”
Agbeko added, “Darchinyan talked a lot before the fight and I turned him into a raging bull-shitter like I said I would. I’m still the champ not the chimpanzee he said I was.”
