Promoter Dan Goossen is already going to work on securing a major title shot for unbeaten super middleweight Andre Ward. Last Saturday in Oakland, California, Ward pulled off the biggest win of his career with a twelve round decision over Edison Miranda. Because WBC champion Carl Froch just finished up with his mandatory, and IBF champion Lucian Bute is holding fort in Canada, Goossen will try to make a fight between Ward and WBO champion Karoly Balzsay.
"Right now we are looking to fight for the world championship. This fight [with Miranda] puts Andre side by side with every champion out there. Froch just had his mandatory against [Jermain] Taylor and quite frankly we don’t believe that we are going to get Bute out of Montreal. One of the champions we would like to focus on is Karoly Balzsay," Goossen would tell BoxingScene.com.
"Balzsay is tough fighter out of Hungary, who beat a very tough fighter in Denis Inkin, in a back and forth fight. Inkin was 34-0 at the time from England. This is a well regarded champion and one that we are certainly going to put an emphasis on doing also. I do believe he is someone who would be willing [to come to America]. I would like to do the fight in Oakland, and I think we can get 18,000 there. We believe Andre Ward is the best 168-pound fighter in the world today."
Balzsay is defending his title against Robert Stieglitz on August 22 in Hungary. If he wins the fight and doesn't get injured, a meeting with Ward could happen in the final quarter of the year.
