Former three division champion Erik Morales (48-6, 34KOs) is ready to begin training camp for his long awaited return to the ring. Morales has not fought since an August 2007 decision loss to then WBC lightweight champion David Diaz. Many ringside observers thought Morales won that fight.
Since the loss, Morales has spoken about a comeback more than once. This time he appears to be serious. ESTO reports that Morales has taken a leave from his position as director of the Municipal Institute of Sport in Tijuana, Mexico, to focus all of his efforts on a three month training camp.
Morales has a target of July for his return. He says that his opponent will be a top contender but it's not yet clear on what the weight will be. If a deal is finalized for Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Juan Manuel Marquez for July 18, there is talk that Morales could appear on the undercard. He wants to get Marquez in the ring and win a fourth world title in his fourth weight class.
