Barrera-Nolasco Will Not Be Approved as WBO Title Fight

The WBO has confirmed to BoxingScene.com that Marco Antonio Barrera's upcoming bout with Johnny Nolasco (17-4, 8KOs) will not be approved for the interim-lightweight title. The fight will happen on January 31 in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Several reports in the Mexican press had inaccurately listed the fight as already being approved for the vacant interim title. The reports raised a lot of eyebrows since Nolasco has been inactive since December of 2007. Barrera’s team may have made a request to the WBO, and they may have anticipated approval, but the sanctioning body will not approve the request.

“The fight is not approved and the WBO is not going to approve [it as] an interim lightweight title [fight],” said a spokesperson for the WBO.

Barrera (64-6, 43KOs) is the mandatory challenger to WBO champion Nate Campbell. He anticipates a shot at Campbell [if he beat Ali Funeka on 2/14] in April. Barrera’s play to have the Nolasco fight approved for the interim title was probably an insurance policy in the event that Campbell is able to land the winner of Juan Manuel Marquez-Juan Diaz, taking place on February 28.

poor barrera. the man is dying to get into bogus title contention at the expense of totally unknown fighters. if he is really testing his capacity to come back, he should fight named boxers not pushovers.
And does it matter if it's over 5 years ago? Your logic is that Campbell is the champ because he already beat Diaz, even if Diaz beats Marquez. But if I say Casamayor was still the champ because he was lineal and had already beat Campbell, you say "that was a lon...
Campbell-Casamayor was over 5 years ago. We spent 3 years trying to get a rematch, which Casa wanted none of. Casa even walked away from a $1.2 million purse bid instead of fighting Nate. Dont forget, after their 2003 fight, even though Joel got the decision, he ended up i...
Yes because Marquez is the champ. Nate Campebll lost to Casamayor. I'm sure you would argue that Campbell is the champ because he beat Diaz, but then what about his loss to Casamayor?
Campbell-Casamayor was over 5 years ago. We spent 3 years trying to get a rema...
