The old saying goes "never say never in boxing," but WBC junior middleweight champion Vernon Forrest (41-3, 29KOs) says he will never fight Sergio Mora in a trilogy bout. Mora won a majority decision over Forrest in June. Two weeks ago in Las Vegas, Forrest returned fire with a strong showing to win a dominating unanimous decision in the rematch. Mora has come out in some circles, demanding a trilogy bout.
"There won't be a third fight, there should have never been a second fight," Forrest would tell BoxingScene.com. "He beat me on a bad night, but I showed he couldn't beat me on a good fight."
At this stage of his career, Forrest is looking for a big name to step up to the plate. He won't allow himself to become a gatekeeper who tests the worth of younger fighters coming up in the ranks. He believes at some point the big welterweight names will have to head in his direction as they move up in weight.
"I’ve proven that I could beat good fighters. I’m looking for a super fight. I want a fight that means something to me, not a fight that just means something to someone else. You come into this sport and you make your bones, then you make your economy money. I did everything I had to do to establish myself. I don’t need to fight any of these up and coming guys. It makes no sense to me.”
“I can’t make welterweight anymore. There’s some good names at 147. If Miguel Cotto comes up, that’s a good fight. If Antonio Margarito comes up, that’s a good fight. Everybody wants to be a multi-champion, one of those guys will talk about moving up and I’ll be right here."
Forrest wants to return in December at the earliest and the first quarter of 2009 at the latest.
