A previously reported on BoxingScene.com, Oscar De La Hoya (39-5, 30KOs) refused to label his Dec. 6 bout with WBC lightweight champion Manny Pacquiao (47-3, 35KOs) as the final fight of his career. De La Hoya doesn't want any decision until after the fight is over, and based on De La Hoya's history - it means more mega-fights are in store.
“We’ll see after the fight on how I feel if this fight will be my last fight or not. Let’s just say my foot got caught in the door,” De La Hoya said.
It may be no coincidence that a few days ago, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer and Golden Boy VP Eric Gomez were discussing potential "future" fights with BoxingScene's James Blears.
Schaefer told Blears that he would like to see De La Hoya fight Ricky Hatton at Wembley Stadium in the UK. Hatton would first have to get past IBF junior welterweight champ Paulie Malignaggi in November. If Hatton wins, he was being positioned for Pacquiao in 09, but if De La Hoya goes through Manny - a Hatton clash would be on the cards.
"A matchup between the two most popular fighters on the planet would be unbelievable, and when I think about places, of course Wembley Stadium comes to mind…or in Mexico the famous Azteca Stadium. These are the dream matchups which might never happen, but I think people are allowed to dream,” Schaefer said.
Gomez on the other hand would like to see Floyd Mayweather Jr. come out of retirement for a De La Hoya rematch.
“I would love it if [Floyd] Mayweather would come out of retirement and Oscar faced him again, because if you see their fight, everyone remembers the result. But it was a close fight which could have gone either way. Mayweather won a split decision," Gomez said." I think Oscar has the tools to beat him. I think he went in there with the wrong strategy. Had he used his jab a little bit more, he would have beat him."
"He was controlling the fight easily for the first six/seven rounds. But he just went away from his game plan. I think that it’s a fight in which Oscar can redeem himself in. Mayweather is considered pound for pound one of the best ever. I feel that Oscar can beat him."
WBA welterweight champ Antonio Margarito has been calling for a De La Hoya fight for the last few weeks. De La Hoya told him to first handle unfinished business with WBO champion Paul Williams. If Margarito handles his business and De La Hoya is still around - would Oscar finally take the challenge?
