Former world champion Ricardo "Matador" Mayorga traveled this Sunday from Nicaragua to Laredo, Texas, United States, where he will develop his preparation for the upcoming fight he will hold against Mexico's Rodolfo Gomez Jr. on April 7 at the Laredo Energy Arena .

Mayorga will develop his preparation in the United States, to try to acquire the best possible physical conditions for this bout against Gómez Jr., a fighter with a record of 12-4-1, with 8 knockouts.

The 45-year-old, with a record of 32-10-1 and 26 knockouts, has always been a popular and always controversial Nicaraguan fighter. Initially, he had announced his retirement from boxing last month,a few weeks after the TKO defeat he suffered last November in Russia against Andrey Sirotkin.

But then the boxer had a change of plans, discarded his announced retirement and revealed that he intended to continue his career, and then accepted this commitment before Gómez Jr. in spite of his advanced age for the sport.

Two-time world champion Rosendo Alvarez, who managed Mayorga's career in his most recent bouts with the promotional company Bufalo Boxing Promotions, ended his manager's contract because he believes that "El Matador" should be removed from professional boxing. He does not agree with Mayorga taking this fight and wanted nothing to do with it.

Mayorga, a former welterweight world champion of the World Boxing Association and the World Boxing Council, as well as the WBC champion at super welterweight, left alone for the United States and without the permission of the Nicaraguan Professional Boxing Commission.

Since his 2011 TKO defeat at the hands of Miguel Cotto, Mayorga has been involved in a wide series of events. He walked away from boxing for a few years to take part in mixed martial arts [MMA]. He was not very successful in the sport and returned to boxing in 2014 after more than three years away.
