According to a BBC Sport interview with Ricky Hatton's lawyer, Gareth Williams, a bout between Hatton and Oscar De La Hoya has a strong possibility of moving forward in 2008, regardless of whether or not Hatton beats Floyd Mayweather Jr. on Dec. 8 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. De La Hoya's company, Golden Boy Promotions, is promoting the big event.

De La Hoya has been honest from the minute Mayweather-Hatton got signed. He wants Hatton to win in order to secure a fight with him in 2008. De La Hoya has helped Hatton with sparring, given Hatton tips on strategy and provided words of encouragement.

"The chances are very strong," said Williams. "We have strong links with Oscar De La Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions and we've had discussions with them."

Hatton and his team would love to stage the De La Hoya fight in Wembley, in front of 80,000 UK fans. Williams says the fight taking place in the UK make sense because it would shatter all gate and attendance records.

"It would be the perfect venue and we could look at selling in excess of 80,000 tickets," Williams said. "Oscar has achieved everything in boxing bar recording the record live gate - and he could achieve that if he fought in the UK against Ricky."
