As previously reported on BoxingScene.com, a deal was finalized for Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (48-1-1, 34KOs) and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (49-2-1, 32KOs) to collide in a battle of Mexican superstars on May 6th, as part of Cinco De Mayo weekend

The fight has long been anticipated by Mexican fight fans, and the overall negotiations to finalize the deal were not easy.

Like many other Mexican boxers, Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, idolized the great Julio Cesar Chavez. Now on May 6th he will be facing his son, Julio Jr.

Alvarez, was asked if his respect and admiration for Chavez Sr. that would be any factor leading into this contest?

"This doesn't change anything, it's a different era now. The father is one thing - the son is another. I still have affection for the father, he's still an idol," Canelo said to a group of reporters on late Friday morning to a small group of reporters on a conference call that was staged to formally announce this fight.

"I'm always going to respect him because he fought in his era. He did so many great things for Mexico.

"But fighting his son has nothing to do with that. Fighting his son, it's going to be a great fight. It's going to be a great fight for the history of Mexico and it's a totally different thing."

Alvarez-Chavez will be contested at a catch-weight of 164.5 pounds. As of yet, a venue has not be finalized for this fight, which will be carried on HBO Pay-Per-View.
