Former two division world champion Paulie Malignaggi says the timing is perfect for a middleweight collision between Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (36-0, 34KOs) and Daniel Jacobs (32-1, 29KOs).

The two sides are currently in talks after the WBA ordered Golovkin to make a mandatory defense against Jacobs. Both New York venues, Barclays and Madison Square Garden in New York City, are hoping to land the anticipated fight.

Golovkin's promoter, Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions, is currently negotiating the terms with Al Haymon, the manager of Jacobs.

The two sides have until October 10th to reach an agreement of a purse bid will be called. They have 120 days to stage the fight.

Golovkin, who holds the WBA/IBO/WBC/IBF middleweight belts, was in action on September 10th, when he traveled over to the UK and stopped IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook in five rounds at the O2 Arena in London. Brook had moved up by thirteen pounds to take the fight after Chris Eubank Jr. was pulled from the negotiations.

The night prior to Golovkin-Brook, Jacobs returned to the ring for the first since last December and retained his WBA 'regular' title with a knockout victory over former champion Sergio Mora, in a rematch of last year's bout which Jacobs won in two rounds after Mora fractured his ankle.

"Right now Danny Jacobs, for me, is the best that he's looked in his career. Danny has been coming up the ladder and looking good against pretty nondescript competition. And he's gained a lot of momentum in doing that. But  now he's beaten two well known fighters. Whether you believe Sergio's Mora's best days are behind him, Sergio is still a practical operator in the ring, a guy who disrupts you, a guy who has timing, a guy who comes out to show his best. He's a very difficult guy to beat, let alone beat looking good, so I give Danny Jacobs a lot of credit for the win and how he handled it," Malignaggi told IFL TV.

"And then the Peter Quillin fight, which was anticipated as one of the better fights of last year. He just came in and blew him out of the water. Sometimes you get caught in round one and what might have been a good fight turns out not to be a good. Hey that's just how boxing is. The momentum is on the side of Danny. He has to take this mega-fight. The time to make Golovkin-Jacobs is right now.

"Great fights get made because of timing. And I think if Canelo-Golovkin doesn't get made, then the time for Golovkin-Jacobs is right now. They both have the momentum.

"I think Jacobs has looked the best that he has in his career, and confidence-wise I think he's where needs to be in his career. He's coming off two big wins now and he's looking terrific doing it. If you're going to make Golovkin-Jacobs, you have to make it right now - not next year or two years from now. They are both at their best right now and the fight is at it's juiciest where people are really going to be into it."
