On June 9th, South Florida’s Randall Bailey returned to the championship ranks with a bang, blasting out Philadelphia’s Mike Jones in chilling and dramatic fashion on the Manny Pacquiao-Timothy Bradley undercard at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. His crippling punching power on display, Bailey is again a champion, as he now holds the IBF welterweight title, and he is looking for the biggest fights possible.

One man who Bailey has seen his name linked to is former champion and welterweight contender Devon Alexander. The St. Louis native is coming off of a dominant unanimous decision over Marcos Maidana this past February, a victory that restored the luster he had lost with a January 2011 loss to Bradley.

On Tuesday night I caught up with Alexander’s trainer Kevin Cunningham to get his thoughts on a possible Bailey-Alexander fight and he also spoke about the Pacquiao-Bradley outcome, the July 14th Amir Khan-Danny Garcia scrap, Maidana’s HBO return, and much more.

This is what Cunningham had to share…

Respecting Randall Bailey…

“I thought it was a spectacular knockout and Randall Bailey has always been one of the most dangerous punchers in boxing. He still has that punch and that’s the thing about Randall Bailey, he has a chance up until that final bell rings. He’s got that one-punch knockout power. He’s a very dangerous guy.”

Making it happen…

“I don’t know what Bailey and his team are doing. This is all started from Bailey doing a radio interview on BoxingScene on the radio show and he said he’s always wanted to fight Devon and he even went to Don King’s office looking to make a fight with Devon. So that’s how it all came about and we responded by ‘Let’s make it happen’. We never knew about it in the past but we can make it happen now.”

Taking in the Manny Pacquiao-Tim Bradley fight…

“I thought Manny won the fight. I thought Bradley gave it a good effort considering it looked like he twisted his ankle or whatever he did with his foot. It looked like, after the fourth round, that he couldn’t push off the back foot. I think he represented himself well but I through that Manny won the fight.”

The latest with Devon Alexander…

“We’re back at the gym. As a matter of fact, I’m on my way to strength training right now. Whether it’s Bailey or whoever it is, we’re getting ready. It doesn’t matter to us who we fight. We’re not chasing Bailey or Paulie Malignaggi or any of these guys who do all this talking. We aint interested in chasing these guys. Devon don’t call nobody out. But anybody that calls him out, he responds and steps to the challenge. And that’s just the way it is.”

Thought on Marcos Maidana returning to welterweight to face Keith Thurman on July 21s on HBO…

“I hear Maidana is still fighting at welterweight; I find that interesting. I find that interesting because after Devon beat him, they said he wasn’t a true welterweight. But here it is and he’s back on HBO fighting at welterweight. It looks like that was just an excuse.”

Not placing any guilt on Lamont Peterson and Andre Berto, who both saw fights fell apart after they were found to have traces of illegal substances in their system…

“I was surprised with both of those guys in particular because I’ve known those guys since the amateurs and they’ve always done things the right way. I was surprised but I think everybody should reserve their judgment until Peterson and Berto get an opportunity to present their response and their case and reasoning for whatever happened. I’m not making any judgment on Berto or Peterson.”

Amir Khan’s July 14th date with Danny Garcia…

“I think it should be a competitive fight. Danny Garcia, he looked really sharp in his last fight. Amir Khan’s coming off the loss to Peterson, so he’s trying to redeem himself. We’ll see what happens.”
