The resignation of former Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer made news headlines earlier this week as the man responsible for most of the companies day to day operations is now gone. A wedge was driven between Schaefer and President Oscar De La Hoya when Oscar made it his goal to start co promoting fights with Top Rank again after years of feuding.

The move proved to be costly as Schaefer chose to exit and it has created a lot of uncertainty for one of the biggest promotional companies in the sport.

The main question now is how many of the fighters that have currently fought under the Golden Boy banner actually have existing contracts.

A large majority of fighters that were perceived to be under Golden Boy are signed to advisor Al Haymon and it is not known at this time how many will remain under Golden Boy’s umbrella.

One fighter that is under contract is Golden Boy’s biggest star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Canelo is currently training in San Diego for his upcoming July 12th pay per view showdown against Cuban Erislandy Lara.

When BoxingScene spoke to Alvarez, he was asked to give his thoughts surrounding the news of Schafer leaving the company.

“I think they know why [it happened]. We’re fine, we’re fine with Golden Boy. We’re doing things good and we keep working the same. I think for me it doesn’t create any problems. Now between them, I don’t know. But for me personally and my career, it’s not affecting it and that’s the most important thing. If it were to affect my career or something, then it would be different but we are working very well under Oscar’s hand and we feel happy” Alvarez would tell BoxingScene.

Alvarez is content in his position and his name has already been discussed in a possible fight with Manny Pacquiao next year as Golden Boy and Top Rank appear will work together very soon once things are sorted out.
