Jose 'Chepo' Reynoso, the coach of WBC 154-pound champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (41-0-1, 30KOs), has no doubt that his pupil has the necessary boxing skills to defeat the best ranked pound for pound fighter in the world, Floyd Mayweather Jr. The two superstars are likely going to co-headline a major pay-per-view on the 4th of May at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

"It's the fight we need to make in order to solidify Canelo as champion once and for all, and we are confident of beating Mayweather. [It's] the fight we want because we are confident that Saul is ready to win," Chepo said.

Reynoso says Golden Boy Promotions is holding ongoing negotiations to finalize Canelo's next fight.

BoxingScene.com reported earlier that a deal has been pretty much reached for Mayweather to face WBC interim-welterweight champion Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero on May 4th.

While reports have had Miguel Cotto as the frontrunner to face Canelo in May, recent indications are pointing in the direction of WBA "regular" champion Austin Trout, who decisioned Cotto earlier this month.

"They are in negotiations and they are moving forward, but for now that is all there is. If they close the deal at the end of 2012 or early 2013, then there will be a conference for the official announcement. We respect the negotiations and until Golden Boy tell us that the fight is not going forward [on May 4] we can not take anything for granted," Chepo said said.

"Hopefully the fight will be with [Mayweather], but we are also negotiating for other boxers in order to have a plan B, [someone like] Miguel Cotto, Austin Trout or someone else who might be a worthy opponent for Saul. Right now there is no rush [to get a training camp going] because we are five months away. A fight of this level is not closed overnight, but we hope the people of Golden Boy get it done. It's a fight that we are very interested in. By May, Canelo will be 100% ready as always, no matter who the opponent is, Canelo is going to give everything and win."
