On Saturday night, inside of the Los Angeles Sports Arena, former two-time junior welterweight champion Amir Khan made a successful return to the ring in dispatching a brave but outgunned Carlos Molina after ten bloody rounds.
Watching the action from ringside was Philadelphia’s Danny Garcia, the reigning WBA and WBC junior welterweight champion. In July, Garcia stopped Khan in under four rounds in their Las Vegas clash at the Mandalay Bay and the British star has been itching for a rematch in order to even the score.
Giving his take on Khan’s performance, Garcia hardly seemed interested.
“He did good,” stated the 24-year old titlist. “He did what he was supposed to do. He beat a smaller guy; dominated. He did what he was supposed to do.”
Obviously focusing on his next ring assignment, a Feb. 9 meeting with former champion Zab Judah, Garcia admits that Khan isn’t of any importance to him at the moment.
“To me, he’s not relevant to me right now because I’m not fighting him,” stated Garcia.
Two weekends back, Khan’s former stable mate Manny Pacquiao suffered a horrendous knockout at the hands of Juan Manuel Marquez. In a wild firefight, both men hit the canvas before a counter right hand from Marquez dropped Pacquiao and left him practically unconscious.
Surely having seen his share of savagery during his time in the sport, Garcia had to admit just how telling Marquez’s triumph was.
“Man, I don’t know,” Garcia stated when asked if Pacquiao could recover from such a defeat. “That was nasty. I haven’t seen [nothing] like that in years. That was crazy.”
Despite being enamored with that performance, Garcia still seems to feel that the 39-year old Marquez in vulnerable when asked about a possible match with WBO welterweight kingpin Timothy Bradley.
“I think Bradley could beat him,” Garcia claimed. “He’s a younger guy. You’ve got to stay away from young guys, man. This is a young man’s sport.”
