According to Chepo Reynoso, co-manager/trainer of WBC 154-pound champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (41-0-1, 30KOs), they are strongly considering a potential fight with WBA "regular' king Austin Trout (26-0, 14KOs) on May 4th.

They were looking to face Miguel Cotto on the May date, but last Saturday Trout scored a unanimous twelve round decision over the Puerto Rican star.

"Cotto was a strong candidate to meet Saul, but he was ruled out with the loss to Trout. Now [Trout] could take his place," Chepo said.

Trout won his title with a twelve round decision over Canelo's older brother, Rigoberto "Espanol" Alvarez, on February 5, 2011 in Guadalajara.

Canelo has respect for Trout and considers him to be a tough opponent.

"Trout is a great fighter, undefeated, he's left-handed and very strong. He has a complicated style and he would be a good choice for next May," Canelo said.

But, both Canelo and Reynoso make it clear that Floyd Mayweather Jr. is their top priority for May. If Mayweather takes a pass, they will pursue other options, and Trout is one of them.
