In an interview Freddie Roach did with BoxingScene last week, he said he had requested additional drug testing for both Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez. In the interview he said the testing request was rejected. Roach appeared to be indicating it was Marquez’s side that rejected the testing but after further investigation, it appears he was indicating it was Top Rank.

In an interview with Leave it in the Ring radio, Roach again said his request for testing was rejected but it wasn’t by Marquez, it was shot down by Bob Arum; the request never got far enough to reach Marquez.

BoxingScene spoke with Bob Arum the day after we talked to Roach. Arum said nobody mentioned it to him and if additional testing was to happen, it would need to be handled by the commission.

“Nobody suggested drug testing on either side until the issue came up this week. Because if the fighters had wanted drug testing I would've given the issue to the commission provided the commission would fund and the commission would've run pre-fight blood and urine tests. But nobody asked me” said Arum.

Additional drug testing in boxing given by outside agencies has become very common surrounding big fights. USADA (United States Anti Doping Agency) and VADA (Voluntary Anti-Doping Association) have been the two agencies used to administer the additional testing.

Arum informed BoxingScene that if any additional testing would happen, he would not use outside agencies.

“Well I’m not going to do it with USADA or VADA or outside agencies without it being under the authority of the commission. Because otherwise you get the nonsense you got in New York with Morales. Test, retest. You have to hand it over to the commission. And if the commission will do it, I think, if you provide them with the funds necessary to do it which we would've been prepared to do but nobody has mentioned pre fight drug testing” said Arum.

At this point its clear there will be no additional drug testing for Pacquiao-Marquez IV and Marquez never denied a request to go through with it as reported last week.
