After Abner Mares defeated Anselmo Moreno he made it clear that the next fight he wanted was against Nonito Donaire in a showdown of the two best Super Bantamweights in the world. A fight between them would be tough to make however due to the fact that both fighter’s promoters, Top Rank and Golden Boy, have had a long standing feud and have refused to work with each other.

It seemed like there was hope when CEO of Golden Boy Richard Schaefer said he’d be willing to talk and work out a deal with Top Rank in order to get the fight made.

BoxingScene spoke to Bob Arum today and was asked if a fight between Mares and Donaire was a fight he’d be willing to make after hearing Schaefer say he would be willing to work out a deal.

“Well one of the things is that Donaire has a fight against [Jorge] Arce so let’s see what happens in that fight. Afterwards we can talk but the WBC informed us that Mares has a mandatory. So you know, I’m sure that fight will happen when it’ll happen” said Arum to BoxingScene.com.

While he is open to a Mares-Donaire fight taking place, Arum made it very clear he has absolutely no interest in working with Golden Boy in the future for any other co-promotions."

“We have no interest in working with Golden Boy. However we will offer them a sum of money for the services of Mares, put them up as a co-promoter but we have no interest doing a regular co-promotion with them” revealed Arum to BoxingScene.

It looks as though the bad blood between both promotional companies still exists which makes any other possible fights between Top Rank and Golden Boy fighters not likely to happen.
