It was a crowded scene on Monday afternoon at the Mayweather Boxing Club in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Now deep into his training for his May 5th bout against Miguel Cotto, Floyd Mayweather Jr., as broadcasted on Ustream, could be found sparring with unbeaten middleweight prospect Omar Henry as over sixty people watched on.

When the sparring, which honestly was relatively tame compared to prizefighting standards, was over, Mayweather made his way to the heavy bag and continued his rigorous work.

During this time I caught up with the unbeaten fighter’s Uncle and trainer Roger Mayweather, who had a little bit of down time before making his way back into the ring to work the mitts with his nephew.

Asked how he feels Floyd is coming along in camp ahead of his challenge for Cotto’s WBA junior middleweight title, Roger showed little concern.

“I already know what Floyd’s going to do,” Roger stated. “Cotto aint sh*t. Floyd’s going to stop his mother****ing ass.”

Brazen stuff from Roger but I honestly didn’t expect anything else.

What’s interesting about this particular camp for Floyd is just how sharp everyone around him feels he is looking despite the Cotto duel being well over five weeks away. Roger pointed out that Floyd’s quick turnaround from his previous contest, a September knockout over Victor Ortiz, is exactly why.

“The reason why Floyd’s in better shape in this camp is that Floyd is fighting so soon,” said Roger. “Most times Floyd don’t fight for eleven, twelve months since the last time he fought. He’s more prepared now because he just fought a little while ago. That’s why he’s more sharp.”

Asked if he worries about Floyd peaking too soon in camp, Roger revealed that all he would have to do is take some time off, which he has done recently.

“He already took a day off already,” said Roger of Junior. “He understands boxing; he knows what he got to do.”

The last question wasn’t expected to get me a great response, but I had to ask Roger how Cotto stacked up against Mayweather’s previous opponents in terms of how formidable he is.

“He aint no different than Victor Ortiz. Floyd will stop him. I guarantee you he will stop him,” stated a candid Roger.

And with that, our conversation came to a close. And while there are many days of hard training left ahead for Floyd Mayweather, don’t expect Roger’s tune to change much over that time.
