Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer was recently approached with an offer for Marcos Maidana to fight WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto in the fall. Maidana, the WBA's interim-champion at 140-pounds, is in the mix for several big fights at his natural weight. Schaefer discussed the fight with Maidana and his manager.

The Golden CEO is not positive that Maidana would entertain the possibility of moving up in weight. Maidana will have a keep busy fight in Argentina on August 28 against DeMarcus Corley. A move to 147 to fight Berto for the WBC title is a big risk, and would threaten his mandatory status to the WBA title at junior welterweight. The date of October 2 has been discussed for Berto's next fight. Andriy Kotelnik is another opponent being explored for Berto.

"We were asked if that would be something that we and Maidana would be interested in. What we did is that we called Maidana and his manager and, you know, we asked them, to see what they would say. But, nothing is set," said Schaefer.

"It was just some interest. Nothing is concrete. It's obviously not his weight. I think that Maidana is obviously one of the best fighters at 140, no question about it, and so I don't know if he would be interested in moving up in weight or not."
