According to multiple reports in Japan, that crushing left hand from Fernando Montiel broke the jaw of Hozumi Hasegawa. The two fought on Friday in a high-stakes bantamweight clash at Nippon Budokan in Tokyo. Montiel, the WBO champion, traveled to Hasegawa's backyard to challenge him for the WBC title.

Hasegawa was the heavy favorite to win the fight. He won the first three rounds, and was on his way to winning the fourth, when a counter lefthook hit him right on the jaw in the closing seconds and turned his legs to jelly. Montiel quickly pounded him against the ropes until the ref jumped in to stop with only a second remaining on the clock.

Shinsei Boxing Gym President Masato Yamashita said Hasegawa is scheduled to undergo surgery and the recovery time is uknown at the moment.
