According to Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, a rematch between Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr. is not exactly a dead issue. A few months ago, the two boxers reached an agreement for a March rematch, and scheduled tuneup fights on December 2. Hopkins won an easy decision over Enrique Ornelas. Jones was not that lucky. He traveled to Australia to challenge IBO cruiserweight champion Danny Green. The result proved to be a disaster when Green stopped Jones in the very first round.

Even with the loss to Green, Schaefer told BoxingScene.com that Hopkins is still very interested in getting some revenge on Jones. Their first encounter took place in 1993, with Jones winning a twelve round decision to capture the vacant IBF middleweight title. In another twist, Jones recently filed a petition to disqualify Danny Green. He claims the Aussie fighter had illegally manipulated his handwraps to add additional punching power.

"I've had numerous conversations with Bernard and there is still that unfinished business. Roy and Bernard have a deep dislike for each other. Jones filed a protest over the handwraps. I read the complaint and it's pretty interesting. That is a possibility," Schaefer told BoxingScene.com

There were negotiations to make a fight between Green and Hopkins. The fight died after the two fighters could not agree on the monetary split. Green's adviser Gary Shaw told BoxingScene that a 50-50 deal was agreed upon, and then Hopkins changed the terms and made a demand for a 60-40 split.

Schaefer sees no reason to make a 50-50 deal with Green. When Jones fought Green, they had an agreement for a 50-50 split - but Schaefer makes his point that Hopkins is bringing more money to the table than Jones, and because of that he deserves to get a higher split.

"Danny Green wants a 50-50 deal. When Roy Jones went over to fight him, it was a 50-50 deal and Roy had no U.S. [television/sponorship] money. Bernard is coming over with a lot of U.S. money and Green still wants 50-50. Why would we agree to that? Danny Green can move on and fight someone else and Hopkins will move on," Schaefer said.
