Well trained and well groomed World Boxing Council middleweight champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) showing admirable professionalism, with a neatly modulated seven day weight in, easily within the prescribed limit.
Gennady was a superb 164.4 pounds. The maximum permitted weight is 168 pounds. With an unblemished record of 37 won fights, 33 of them concluding by knockout, Gennady will defend his green and gold crown, and the IBO, WBA, IBF world titles against Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs) this coming Saturday at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The World Boxing Council requires 30 days, seven days and 24 hours before the fight weigh ins, for the health and well being of fighters, to insure they reach the category weight limit, gradually, properly, professionally and sensibly, avoiding excessive and rapid weight loss, which can be brought about by dangerous dehydration.
Because Canelo has refused to fight for the WBC belt, his weight points are unknown for this contest. Canelo is taking part in his first bout at the full middleweight limit of 160-pounds.
While a WBC middleweight champion in the past, Canelo never fought above the catch-weight of 155-pounds while competing at the weight.
For his latest fight back in May, he moved up to a catch-weight of 164.5-pounds to dominate countryman Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. over twelve rounds, also at the T-Mobile.
Canelo vs. Golovkin will headline a four fight HBO Pay-Per-View event.
