The Experts Decide: Sergio Martinez vs. Sergiy Dzinziruk

By Lem Satterfield

BoxingScene.com has sought the opinion of nine boxing insiders as to their thoughts on who will win Saturday night's Lou DiBella Entertainment, HBO televised clash between former WBC middleweight Sergio Martinez (46-2-2, 25 knockouts) and WBO junior middleweight champion Sergei Dzinziruk (37-0, 23 KOs) in a clash of southpaws.

Bob Canobbio, CompuBox

Sergio Martinez UD 12 Sergei Dzinziruk: Sergio Martinez by close, but unanimous decision over Sergei Dzinziruk. They're both southpaws, which could make for a less than scintillating fight.  Dzinziruk will stay in the fight courtesy of his active jab. Dzinziruk averaged 34 jabs thrown per round in his seven  fights tracked by CompuBox.

Dzinziruk's also accurate with his stick, landing nearly 10 per round, which is double the middleweight average. But Dzinziruk, a natural junior middleweight, has never faced a fighter of Martinez's caliber.

Martinez hits harder than Dzinziruk, but he shouldn't fall in love with his punching power following his one punch demolition of Paul Williams.

Steve Farhood, Showtime Boxing Analyst

Sergio Martinez W 12 Sergei Dzinziruk: This is a bad style matchup for the challenger, Sergei Dzinziruk, who finds that his jab isn't as valuable as usual against a lefty. Sergio Martinez proves too quick and wins comfortably on points.

Norm Frauenheim, 15rounds.com

Sergio Martinez W 12 Sergei Dzinziruk: Sergio Martinez by decision over Sergei Dzinziruk. It’s a dangerous fight for Martinez. The deliberate, tactical Dzinziruk could upset Martinez's plans to celebrate his Fighter of the Year honor at the Boxing Writers dinner in May. But he won’t.

Dzinziruk’s jab will gain him an earely lead on the scorecard. By the later rounds, however, Martinez’s relentless pace will allow him to get inside, where he is at his best. That’s when and where he will score often enough to claim a narrow victory.

Thomas Gerbasi, BoxingScene.com

Sergio Martinez W 12 Sergei Dzinziruk: The casual fan won't know Sergei Dzinziruk, but he'll be a tough nut to crack for Sergio Martinez. Martinez should win, but it won't be easy.

Kevin Iole, Yahoo! Sports

Sergio Martinez W12 Sergei Dzinziruk: Sergio Martinez will have a great deal of difficulty finding openings and fending off Sergei Dzinziruk's jab. But Martinez is one of the hottest fighters in the sport, and will find a way to pull it out.

Rick Reeno, BoxingScene.com

Sergio Martinez UD 12 Sergei Dzinziruk: I think that Sergio Martinez will be too fast for Sergei Dzinziruk. The fight will be more competitive than expected. But I believe Martinez will win a twelve round unanimous decision by using his legs and by boxing.

Michael Rosenthal, Ring TV.com

Sergio Martinez UD 12 Sergei Dzinziruk: Sergio Martinez by unanimous decision. Sergei Dzinziruk will make things difficult for Sergio Martinez because of his tight technique and effective jab. But the Argentine's superior athleticism and power, combined with solid skills, will give him the nod.

Tim Smith, New York Daily News

Sergio Martinez W 12 Sergio Dzinziruk: Sergio Martinez has to be upset that he can't get the kinds of big fights that are warranted after beating Kelly Pavlik and Paul Williams. Martinez has power and speed and is an accomplished boxer. He'll use all those skills to defeat Sergei Dzinziruk.

Martinez by decision.

Austin Trout, WBA junior middleweight champion

Sergio Martinez W 12 Sergei Dzinziruk: I was part of Sergio Martinez's camp, and think that he is going to win. I think that he could have trouble getting away from Sergei Dzinziruk's sharp jab. But Martinez is very crafy and learns to adapt as he goes along. So I'm picking Sergio Martinez by decision.

[QUOTE=Freedom!;10221320]All those predictions of Martinez winning by decision are wrong. Martinez will win by KO. The one fighter at 154 and 160 that Dzinziruk cannot possibly beat is Martinez. The style matchup is very bad for Sergiy and Martinez…

taking Martinez, in a very competitive match, by late stoppage. Ive seen the way he opened up Pavlik and the way his speed allows him to beat everyone to the punch. I know Dzinziruk can follow Pavliks gamplan and use…
